Thesis Title: Women's Spiritual Reading as a Third Wave Feminist Practice

Deborah F. Sawyer

About

In August 2010, I successfully defended my thesis and was awarded my PhD in Religious Studies from Lancaster University. My doctoral project was a qualitative exploration of Christian and post-Christian women's spiritual reading practices. It utilised this data to explore and subsequently connect third wave feminism and feminist theology, two modes of gender analysis that rarely enter into dialogue.

This work signifies my research interests in gender and religion; feminist theologies and hermeneutics; sacred text studies; reader-response studies; third wave feminisms and feminist generations; and qualitative methods.

I have published on these themes, including the  edited volume (with Deborah F. Sawyer),  'Reading Spiritualities: Constructing and Representing the Sacred' (2008). I am contributing to a forthcoming volume entitled 'Religion and Knowledge (Guest and Arweck, Ashgate) and I have also contributed to Chris Klassens' collection 'Feminist Spirituality: The Next Generation' (2009). I was also the principal conference organiser of 'Reading Spiritualities' (Lancaster, 2006) and have presented at various national and international conferences.
